The local ski resort claims that a rocky Alpine path connecting two glaciers in Switzerland has emerged for the first time in at least 2,000 years. This is a result of the hottest European summer ever recorded.

Glacier 3000, a ski resort in western Switzerland, stated that this year's ice melting was three times greater than the 10-year average. This means that bare rock can be seen at 2,800m between the Scex Rouge glaciers and the Zanfleuron glaciers. The pass will then be exposed completely by the end this month.

"About 10 years ago, I measured 15 metres (50 ft) of ice there so all that ice has melted in between," stated Mauro Fischer of the University of Bern's Institute of Geography.

He said: "What we saw this summer and this year is just extraordinary" and referred to the speed with which the ice melted.

The Alps have been sweltering since last winter, when there was very little snowfall. Data showed that the Alps' glaciers are on track to suffer their largest mass losses in at most 60 years of record-keeping.
